HOW TO PRACTICE SELFCARE

https://www.pexels.com/@mdsnmdsnmdsn

One of the things that I have decided to do during the 21daylevelingupchallenge is practicing self-care. I have had terrible moods lately and a lot of anxiety, which has affected my health. My life has been a roller-costar over the past few months, and it has not been smooth sailing. Having no job and the constant fear of catching Covid-19 has taxed my mental health. Choosing to practice self-care is super important because when I feel physically and emotionally well, it will be easier for me to navigate the constant challenges I face in healthy and productive ways.

What is self-care?

Self-care is pretty much certain activities that we do specifically to protect and take care of our mental, physical and emotional health. There is no one size fits all when it comes to self-care; it is essential to know what you are caring for so that you consider the options that will not be stressful to you. For example, if you feel low on energy or lack any motivation, it will be wise not to adopt practices that require a lot of physical exertion. If its mental health that you want to take care of, try avoiding activities that are too strenuous to the mind and limit social interaction.

However, if you are at a loss on how to go about it, you should seek a second opinion, especially if you are in a lot of pain or are struggling mentally.

So what are some of the ways that you can practice self-care?

Get some R and R

Getting some much-needed rest and relaxation is one of the best ways of taking care of yourself. Taking a bit of rest is good for your body as it allows you to recharge and get back some of the energy that you might be low on. Relaxation comes in many forms; you could take a long bath, read a book, or listen to your favorite podcast.

Pamper yourself

They say that a pampered self is a relaxed self. Pampering yourself could mean many things, getting a massage, maybe running a hot bath with some fancy bath bombs, getting your hair done, getting a manicure or pedicure, or taking yourself out to a restaurant and enjoying a glass of wine.

Visit the outdoors

Being outdoors can do wonders for your physical and mental health. You can take a nature walk, have a picnic, take a hobby like bird watching or foraging, or better yet try outdoor yoga or meditation

Get creative

Art in any medium allows you to express yourself in ways that can help you feel more relaxed and less stressed. There so many options such as painting, sewing, writing, singing, the possibilities are endless.

Digital detox

We live in an age where technology is all around us and is arguably intrinsically woven into our lives. However, taking some time away from screens, smartphones, tablets, laptops, etc.is good for your physical, mental, and emotional health. Reduced screen time will lessen damage to the eyes and will help you sleep better. It will also help you relax and reduce stress and anxiety.

These are just a few ways to help you get started. However, you must take time to figure out what self-care activities work for you as every person is different. Use these few activities as a starting point to work out what will work for you.

“It is so important to take time for yourself and find clarity. The most important relationship is the one you have with yourself.”
